Muscle Hill locked up divisional honors with a world record performance in the $700,000 Breeders Crown 2-year-old colt and gelding trot, drawing away in the lane for a 1:53.3 victory over the previously undefeated Explosive Matter and Ron Pierce. Federal Flex and Jody Jamieson were third. Muscle Hill got away fourth as Keystone Activator took the field to the quarter in :28.2, then as Jamieson pulled first-over with Federal Flex, Brian Sears followed with Muscle Hill. Following him was Explosive Matter who sat first-over past the three quarters in 1:25.1. But in the lane Sears asked for more and Muscle Hill responded for the easy victory. The time is a world mark for freshman trotting colts on a mile track. “I knew Explosive Matter was a very, very nice colt,” said Sears. “I knew one thing about my colt, I never emptied the tank on him all year, he always had something left every race. Tonight I said we’re going to empty the tank. I gave him a little extra score and he was very alert. And when I used him pretty hard down the backside, he felt comfortable. He gets over the ground so good, he’s like driving a little sports car.”
