Muscle Mass sets Balmoral mark in American National final

World Champion Muscle Mass added another track record to his early freshman season, capturing the $115,000 American National for 2-year-old colt and gelding trotters at Balmoral Park in 1:56.1 Sunday night.

With Brent Holland in the bike, the son of Muscles Yankee sat third through the :29.1 opening quarter then moved to the lead at the :58.3 half. From there the race was all his as he passed the three quarters in 1:27.3 and began drawing away. At the wire he was 9 3/4 lengths ahead of the second-place Maxter and Dave Magee.

The victory is the fifth in as many starts for Muscle Mass, who is trained by Ervin Miller for owners Perretti Racing Stable and Black Horse Racing. In his second career start in the Review Stakes at Springfield, Muscle Mass won in a world record 1:53.4 for a freshman colt trotter over a mile track.
