The $70,000 Helen Smith Memorial for 3-year-old filly trotters was contested at Freehold Raceway Friday afternoon. The overwhelming favorite Muscle Shirt won in 1:56.3 with Cat Manzi at the lines for trainer Chuck Sylvester. Owned by Irving Liverman, Neal Goldman, Alan Caplan and Keith Dickstein, Muscle Shirt set a new lifetime mark in the race. Fancy Vacation took the early lead easily with Andy Miller and was not pressured until the three quarter mark, when Muscle Shirt flexed her muscles and pressed past her. Fancy Vacation had cruised through fractions of :28.1, :57.4, and 1:27.1 before she lost the lead to the Muscles Yankee filly. Down the stretch, Meucci Madness made her move to the inside to pass Fancy Vacation, but broke and finished fourth and was pulled to fifth because of the breaking violation. There was a photo finish for second, in which Fancy Vacation was determined to be the second-place finisher and Winbak Brat was third.
