The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale got underway Wednesday night and a total of 98 yearlings were sold for an average price of $89,846, a 2.3 percent increase over the 2007 average of $87,824.

The strongest segment of the market was the trotting colt sector as 25 colts brought an average of $107,920. Trotting fillies were right behind with 26 bringing an average of $100,230. The 27 pacing colts sold generated an average price of $78,666 while 20 pacing fillies brought an average of $68,850.

Hip number 75 was the sale topper at Fasig-Tipton on Wednesday night. The Muscles Yankee colt, the first colt and second foal of the stakes-winning filly Pizza Dolce, topped the sale when he was sold with a final bid of $415,000 to David McDuffee, who campaigned raced Pizza Dolce and also owns the mare's first foal, the stakes-winning filly Bella Dolce.

Hunterton Sales Agency consigned the sale topper, named Capo Dolce.

The sale got off to a strong start as bidders, especially those in the main arena, were active and kept the bidding lively. Hip number 4, Asset Blue Chip, a Credit Winner full brother to the stakes-winning Victor Blue Chip, fetched a bid of $170,000 from Celebrity Farms LLC.

Four horses later, Jules Siegel had the final bid of $200,000 on Dolce Ducci, a Muscles Yankee colt. The colt is the first foal of the Self Possessed mare Self Indulgent 3, 1:53.3.

Also of note, a half brother to Somebeachsomewhere was sold for $150,000 to trainer Kelly O'Donnell. The colt is by the late stallion Astreos while Somebeachsomewhere is a son of Mach Three. At the time he signed the sales slip O'Donnell said he wasn't sure exactly who would be buying the colt.
