Muscular ($73.80), a 35-1 longshot, closed with a burst of speed in mid stretch to upset the field in capturing the $10,000 Open Handicap Trot at Pompano Park Wednesday. Owned, trained and driven to victory by Dave Mercer, Muscular posted his ninth win of the year with a 1:56.2 triumph over Muscle Boss Vita (Kevin Wallis) with Battleshoe Victor (Wally Hennessey) third.

The feature race started off with Damon Runyon and driver Brett Miller coming on the outside to take the early lead away from race favorite Guy Gets Girl (Bruce Ranger) by the opening quarter mile in :27.2. Then, by the half mile pole in :58, Hennessey moved first-over with Battleshoe Victor as Muscular came up second-over to follow the live outside flow to the three-quarters in 1:27.

Mercer then tipped Muscular three wide at the top of the stretch and line-drove the 6-year-old gelding to the wire for the easy victory.

It was an owner/trainer/driver double for Mercer, who also won the sixth race trot with Phil McRackin ($15.20) in 1:58.1. That was the sixh win this year and a lifetime mark for the 3-year-old filly by Imperial Victory.

Ranger led all drivers on the night with a Grand Slam, winning four races on the program. (Pompano Park)
