Mya Tri may have faced her toughest test to date in a $15,120 Indiana Sires Stakes contest Friday, August 29, but the result was the same for the trotting filly. Driven by Walter Haynes Jr., the sophomore extended her career undefeated streak to 20 with a lifetime best 1:56.1 effort at Indiana Downs. She will be the clear favorite in next week’s $100,000 final. Haynes wasted little time moving Mya Tri to the lead when the gate folded in the night’s sixth race. The Pining Fora Tri filly clicked off an opening quarter in :28 before receiving a challenge from Lakeview Star and Dan Shetler nearing the half. Shetler moved his filly first up, taking a narrow lead on the outside. But Haynes wouldn’t allow his challengers to clear for the lead, hanging them on the outside through the turn. In the stretch, Mya Tri and Haynes went to work, drawing away from the group of 11 adversaries. ABC Valentine and trainer Don Eash, driving one of Eash Racing Stable’s five-filly entry, were flying late, but could not make up enough ground before the wire. Lakeview Star rounded out the trifecta. Now 20-for-20 in her career, Mya Tri has rolled up $219,700 in lifetime earnings. The filly was bred by Bob Wientjes, who co-owns the multiple ISS champion with Haynes, whose wife, Sara, serves as trainer. The winning time shaved two-fifths of a second off Mya Tri’s previous best, set in her last start. Earlier on the card, Haynes guided 11-1 long shot First Notable Chip to victory in the $12,000 fourth leg of ISS action for sophomore colt and gelding trotters. The Doug Rideout trainee charged up on the outside late to edge Secret Image in a photo in a time of 1:56.4. Favorite Secret Joe was third. The gelded son of New And Notable is owned by Dr. Alan White and Julie Rideout. Racing on both the pari-mutuel and fair circuits this season, First Notable Chip earned his 10th win in 23 starts. The sophomore has banked just over $31,000 this season. Trotting mare Wigwam Baby used Friday’s $7,500 Indiana Sires Stakes prep race to her advantage. The defending ISS champion, driven by Shetler, sat along the rail through most of the circuit as Secret Star and LW Sweet Talker slugged it out on the front through fractions of :28.1, :57.2 and 1:24.2. Racing out of the last turn, the Padre Hanover mare angled three-wide from the pylons and stopped the clock in 1:56.1. ABC Bay Bee and Mark O’Mara were second and Perfect Bubbles finished third. Owned and bred by Don Swartzentruber and trained by Robert Wagler, Wigwam Baby earned her second seasonal victory. The five year old has six runner-up finishes to her credit to go with just over $57,000 in earnings.
