My Masterpiece upsets Scape Ghost in Jr. Trendsetter

My Masterpiece steamrollered through an opening in the stretch to pull off a 50-1 shocker in the $81,500 Junior Trendsetter, defeating Scape Ghost, who had won two legs and started from the rail in the final.

Scape Ghost, the heavy 1-5 favorite, was rambunctious behind the starting gate and darted to the lead before the half-mile marker.  After repelling the first-over challenge of Dax Hanover, Scape Ghost opened up to a two-length lead in the stretch; however, he could not hold off the charge of the field behind him.

Driver Daniel Dube threaded My Masterpiece between horses and they soared past the tiring leader for a half-length victory.  My Masterpiece paid $102.20 to win the evening’s fifth race for 3-year-old pacers.  The mile was clocked in 1:53.

“When we got to the gate, I turned my head and saw [Scape Ghost] was off the gate,” Dube said, “so I just stepped out of there and it turned out to be a good trip.  “I was third on the rail and finally found some room at the right time.”

My Masterpiece was a $65,000 yearling purchase by David Schneider of Coral Springs, Florida and Rocco Maniello of Malba, New York.  Tim Case trains the lightly raced son of Artsplace-Armbro Ophelia, who improved his record to two wins in five career starts. (Meadowlands)
