Rebounding from a rare out-of-the-money finish, Mystery Chase roared to the front and never faced a serious challenge in capturing Tuesday's $25,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.
Although he had won two straight in wire-to-wire fashion, Mystery Chase ducked last week and tired from the ensuing first-over bid. Eric Ledford took no chances Tuesday, gunning the 5-year-old Real Artist-Search For Cam gelding to the lead from post nine. Mystery Chase clicked off matching :55.4 halves and scored in 1:51.3, three-quarters of a length better than Western Bay. Clapifuc Bluegrass finished third.
Donnie Russell trains Mystery Chase, who pushed his career bankroll to $670,597, and owns with Edward Needle. With his place finish, Western Bay surpassed the $400,000 mark in lifetime earnings. (The Meadows)
