Mystical Sunshine lowered her own world record for older trotting mares on a half-mile track with a 1:53.2 victory in the $116,000 Ms Versatility final Thursday at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds, an effort that was also the fastest mile ever posted on a two-turn oval by a trotter regardless of sex. The time lowered the previous all-age mark of 1:54 set by Pine Chip at Delaware in 1994.
Mystical Sunshine, who had cut the fractions in last year's Ms Versatility final at Delaware before making a late break that took her out of contention to a sixth-place finish, chopped one full second off her mark set Aug. 17 at Freehold.
Driven by Daniel Dube, Mystical Sunshine set fractions of :26.4, :56.2 and 1:24.4, opening up on her rivals in the final turn to draw clear to the victory with a final quarer of :28.3. Wildfire Julie finish second with Birminghim third.
Queen Serene made a break at the start for driver Brian Sears to take her quickly out of contention, while Passionate Glide, who had ranged up first-over in the middle portion of the contest, did the same in the final turn. The field was reduced by one starter when the Noel Daley-trainee Up Front Hotsey fell during the post parade for driver Andrew McCarthy and was subsequently scratched by the stewards.
Mystical Sunshine, a 6-year-old daughter of Yankee Glide, is owned by Sid Korn and the estate of Alvin Jacobson, who died this past spring. Chris Ryder trains the trotter who has earnings of more than $1.75 million.
