Mystical Sunshine, a 6-year-old daughter of Yankee Glide, obliterated the five-eighths mile track world record for trotting mares when she won at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in 1:52.4 Monday afternoon. The clocking erased the previous standard of 1:53.2 first set by Moni Maker and then equaled by Windylane Hanover.
Daniel Dube drove Mystical Sunshine to the record-setting victory for trainer Chris Ryder. Stacelita, driven by Cat Manzi, took the field to the first quarter in :28.2 before Dube sent Mystical Sunshine up to take command. Dube loafed over to the half-mile mark in :57 before Buck I St. Pat was pulled first-over and Ron Pierce followed with Passionate Glide.
Dube picked up the pace down the back straightaway, making it tough for Buck I St Pat and Passionate Glide to gain ground. Mystical Sunshine hit the three-quarter station in 1:25.1 before shifting into overdrive, with a few taps from Dube as an assist.
Buck I St Pat dug in to take second while Stacelita hung on for third. Passionate Glide flattened out and failed to threaten after following Buck I St Pat to the top of the homestretch.
Mystical Sunshine's career best time is 1:52.2, taken last year as a 5 year old. With her victory in the $20,000 Pocono feature her earnings inched close to the $1.5 million mark. The mare has been campaigned by Sid Korn and Alvin Jacobson, who died on May 8.
