North America Cup winner Total Truth is now headed to Saturday’s $500,000 Hoosier Cup at Hoosier Park, as trainer and co-owner George Teague made a last-minute decision to enter the sophomore colt pacer.
“There’s a three-week gap now until the Meadowlands Pace (elims) so I was either going to have to qualify him or go somewhere else anyway,” Teague told harnessracing.com Wednesday morning. “I figured he was pretty fit and built for those kinds of races.”
Sixteen names were dropped into the Hoosier Cup box, forcing the contest into a two-heat situation as the conditions call for same-day elims and final. Teague said that scenario doesn’t bother him.
“I just hope it doesn’t take too much out of him before the Meadowlands Pace, but I think we’ll be all right with the two-week gap,” he said. “He’s still bouncing off the walls.”
Teague added regular driver Ron Pierce has committments at Mohawk that night, so he had to make a driver change to Yannick Gingras.
“I talked to Ronnie and I don’t think he’ll be able to go. He’s obligated to others, and has a full card at Woodbine,” said Teague. “He said he wished I had told him earlier, but I hadn’t made up my mind until about nine o’clock this morning.”
