Native Bride bounced back from a heartbreaking loss in the James M. Lynch Memorial to capture a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes win on Tuesday afternoon at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.
The 3-year-old filly from the Joe Pavia Jr. barn went off as the 1-5 favorite in the Lynch at Pocono on June 14 but finished fourth for just the second loss of her career. On Tuesday, with Brian Sears in the bike, she overcame a tough first-over trip to win her Sire Stakes debut by a half-length in 1:52.1. The win gives Native Bride 9 wins in 11 career starts. Dragonfest finished second while Aqua Rosa got the show.
There were five divisions for the 3-year-old pacing fillies held at Pocono on Tuesday, with purses ranging from $42,152 to $42,553.
In the first division, Makerbark shocked the faithful with a front-running victory at 19-1. Owned, trained, and driven by Roger Hammer, the filly, who had failed to even hit the board in her previous nine starts this year, never left the lead and came home in 1:52.4 to win by two lengths. Flying Color rallied late for econd while Up Front Bethann, the 2-5 favorite, had to settle for third.
In the second split, Ali Rush, with Yannick Gingras in the bike, found room in the inside passing lane late in the stretch to rally past several tiring horses for the win in 1:53.3. The filly, at 5-1 in her first ever stakes race for trainer Darran Cassar, necked out 6-5 favorite Lucy B at the line. Real Nasty Miss finished third.
Pavla Hanover, a 5-1 shot driven by Mike Wilder for trainer Dan Altmeyer, used a pocket trip and a big late kick to get up and win the third division in 1:52.2. Pavla Hanover sped by 4-5 favorite and pacesetter Saymynamesaymyname by a length at the wire. Traz finished third.
Driver Gingras was at it again in the day’s final division, winning aboard Respectable. Respectable, who just missed in second in the Lynch final, posted the day’s fastest winning time of 1:52 as she overcame the outside post for trainer Steve Elliott to win by 2 3/4 lengths as the 2-5 favorite. Riven Hanover finished second and Fiddle Rose was third. (Pocono Downs)
