Hall of Fame trainer Bob McIntosh told harnessracing.com Friday afternoon shortly after Nebupanezzar won a qualifier at Mohawk that he hopes to have the 3-year-old pacer ready for the Little Brown Jug on Sept. 24 at Delaware, Ohio. The son of No Pan Intended has not raced since winning the Ontario Sire Stakes Super final last November due to a tendon injury in his right front leg.
“I was very pleased with him this morning and Steve (driver Steve Condren) was too,” said McIntosh from his home outside Windsor, Ont., shortly after Nebupanezzar won his qualifier by 5 ½ lengths in 1:53.2. “Everything looks good soundness-wise; he just needs some tightening up.”
Nebupanezzar was the richest 2-year-old pacer in 2008 with $946,365 in earnings for Bob Glazer’s Peter Pan Stables. A winner in 10 of 14 starts, Nebupanezzar took his lifetime mark of 1:51.2 while capturing the $647,800 Governor’s Cup final.
McIntosh said he was pleased with Nebupanezzar’s recovery from the injury.
“It’s hardly noticeable right now and I’m very happy with it,” said McIntosh.
McIntosh said he plans on one or possibly two more qualifiers for Nebupanezzar before deciding on an exact pari-mutuel schedule. “He’ll dictate where we go. He still has some Sire Stakes up here, the Simcoe, and things like that. We’ll take it a week at a time.”
McIntosh said the Little Brown Jug is now very much in the cards for Nebupenezzar as he hopes to finally win the race which is still missing on his Hall of Fame resume.
“It would be very nice to be in there, that’s for sure,” he said. “And he loves a half-mile track.”
