Nebupanezzar wins $820,000 Governor's Cup

Steve Condren waited as long as he could for cover, but if he had had to wait any longer, Nebupanezzar may not have been able to put his nose on the wire first and win the $820,000 Governor’s Cup final by a head over Art Colony in 1:51.2.

"He's just been getting stronger and better every week," said Condren. "That little break he had, and he had some sickness problems there for a while, but he just overcame them and turned into just a real pleasure and a real nice horse.

"He went a big trip. It just didn't work out the way I thought it would. He just overcame it all. It actually wasn't a very good drive but it worked out, the colt just came to the forefront. I hope he puts away well this fall. I look forward to driving him next year in some of
the bigger races around here."

Nebupanezzar started from post three, but Condren decided to float at the start and look for a strategic spot. None developed at the pylons and he was stuck parked with Nebupanezzar, a gelded son of No Pan Intended.

Condren bided his time on the outside while a trio of “Art” youngsters—Major In Art, Amazon Art and finally Art Colony—took turns on the lead. Art Colony, driven by Randy Waples, was leading the field at the half in :55.1. That’s about when Brian Sears tipped Dial Or Nodial, a colt riding a four-race win streak, to the outside. That gave Condren his cover.

At the half Nebupanezzar was 8 ¾ lengths behind the leader. But the long Woodbine stretch loomed. Sears ducked inside with Dial Or Nodial while Condren stayed in an outside lane with Nebupanezzar, who edged Art Colony for the win, with Major In Art holding on for third.

Peter Pan Stables bred and owns Nebupanezzar, who now has eight wins in 11 starts this season. Bob McIntosh trains the youngster sired by No Pan Intended, who Peter Pan Stables also campaigned.
