Nemo causes cancellations, race page changes

February 08, 2013 | Print View

Anyone looking for Nemo has certainly found him as he has taken aim at the Northeast. Winter Storm Nemo has prompted racetracks on the East Coast to cancel at the least Friday night, including Yonkers Raceway and the Meadowlands, where three divisions of the Junior Trendsetter Series were scheduled to be contested. Other tracks will likely follow as the storm's path takes it from Michigan through Ontario and into New York, so be sure to check back often on this site for up-to-the minute updates. One track sure to go tonight is Cal Expo, where Friday's high is expected to reach 58.

Due to the cancellations, we have changed Friday's Weekend Featured Races to include Friday night races at The Meadows, which has a post time of 6:55 p.m. for a 14-race card. The pages are available by clicking here and going to page 2 of the Weekend Preview.

Female trotters are in the spotlight at The Meadows as the card kicks off with an $18,000 Preferred Trot restricted to the distaff side. Race secretary Tom Leasure assigned the outside post six to Perfect Chance, who is coming off a sharp 1:54.3 victory in the same class last time out on Jan. 18.

Listed as the 8-5 favorite, Perfect Chance comes into the race off a 21-day layoff by trainer Ron Burke. The 6-year-old daughter of Andover Hall wrapped up her 2012 campaign with three straight victories at The Meadows and then began the new year with a second-place finish in the Preferred before her score in her latest effort. Dave Palone will drive.

Action-Broadway is the 5-2 second choice out of the Virgil Morgan Jr. barn. The 6-year-old daughter of Broadway Hall is less than $30,000 away from millionaire status. Included among her 25 career victories is the 2011 Armbro Flight final. Brett Miller will drive from post three.

The co-feature is the 8th race, a $15,000 conditioned trot for fillies and mares. Dropping down from Preferred company is Summertime Yankee, who finished eighth last time out in that Jan. 18 race won by Perfect Chance after leading early. Aaron Merriman will drive the 2-1 choice from post one for trainer William Bercury.
