Horseman Kenneth Martin, 71, of Fair Haven, Vermont, died Thursday evening, June 5, at his residence, following a long illness, surrounded by his family.
He was born on June 24, 1942, in Benson, the son of Raymond and Glenna Martin. At an early age, he went to live with Hazel and Julius Mestyan. Mr. Martin married Gale Gilmore on August 31, 1963. He was employed as a carpenter for several years by Bud Carpenter and Bob Cunningham, and was self-employed as a building contractor for many years in the Fair Haven area.
He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association, Saratoga Harness Association, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and a past member of the Fair Haven Fire Department.
Mr. Martin's greatest love of life was his horses. He loved tending to them, racing them and going on the fair circuit with his best friend and horse buddy, his granddaughter. Amanda.
Survivors include his wife, Gale Martin of Fair Haven; a son, John J.J. Martin and his companion, Wendy Maniery, of Castleton; granddaughter Amanda Martin of Poultney. He is also survived by Hazel Mestyan, a sister, Pat Frazier and her husband, Richard, brothers Charlie Martin and his wife, Mary, Denny Martin and his wife, Mary, all of Fair Haven; Steve Mestyan and his wife, Melissa, of Hampton, N.Y.; David Martin and his wife, Dale, of Sudbury; and Bob Mestyan of Fair Haven; a sister in-law, Gloria Perry, and her husband, Don, of Whitehall, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Gary Gilmore, and his wife, Sue, of Clarendon; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Donny Martin, and Julius Mestyan.
Friends may call on Sunday from 1 until 4 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St. in Fair Haven.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Durfee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
