New freshman filly record set at Hiawatha

Voelz Hanover set a new world record for 2-year-old filly pacers on a five-eighths mile track Thursday night at Hiawatha Horse Park, capturing the $130,000(C) Ontario Sire Stakes Gold final with a 1:51.3 effort for trainer-driver Rick Zeron. The time lowered the previous mark set last month at Harrah’s Chester by the Steve Elliott-trained Lady Annie by two-fifths of a second.

Zeron moved Voelz Hanover, a daughter of Astreos, the to the lead shortly after the opening :27.3 quarter set by Shake That Junk and driver Jody Jamieson. Zeron then yielded the lead to the 3-5 favorite Chancey Lady, who tripped the half-mile timer in :55.4. Chancey Lady still had the lead at the 1:24.3 three quarters but by that time Voelz Hanover had been tipped from the pocket to take aim.

Voelz Hanover was able to edge past the game Chancey Lady to win by a neck, with the Mike Vanderkemp-driven Southwind Swallow—at odds of 143-1--finishing third. John Campbell, making a rare driving appearance at the track in Sarnia, Ont., finished fourth with All Accounted For.

Voelz Hanover is out of the $154,000-winning mare Vassar Hanover, thus she is a half sister to the $571,000-winning Northern Sun. Bred by Hanover Shoe Farms, she was purchased last fall as a yearling by R. Berthiaume Inc. of Montreal for $27,000. Her win Thursday was her seventh of the year in 12 starts, increasing her earnings to $215,378.
