May 16, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine, at the request of the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey, has declared Wednesday, May 21, as World Cup Amateur Drivers Championship Day.

The proclamation notes that a pair of New Jersey tracks–Freehold and the Meadowlands–will host an international cast of amateur drivers in events contested on May 21. The last of the preliminary events will take place that afternoon at Freehold while the finals will take place at the sports premier venue, the Meadowlands, that evening.

The proclamation also acknowledges the SBOANJ’s role as the representative of the thousands of people in the harness racing industry, which is an important part of the state’s economy.

The multi-national competition among 12 amateur drivers, including United States representative David Siegel, chief executive of TrackMaster Inc., begins on May 16 at Maywood Park and makes stops at Balmoral Park on May 17, Monticello Raceway on May 19 and Yonkers Raceway on May 20 before the final two stops in New Jersey.

In addition to the United States, the drivers will represent Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Spain.

The text of the proclamation:

Whereas, the World Cup Amateur Driving Championship, an international harness racing event, is conducted every four years to coincide with the Olympics; and
Whereas, a major goal of the event isi to achieve status as an Olympic demonstration sport for harness racing; and
Whereas, the 2008 World Cup Amateur Driving Championship will conclude at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and Freehold Raceway in Freehold, New Jersey, on May 21, 2008, after events in Illinois and New York on May 15-20; and
Whereas, this event is enthusiastically supported by the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey, which represents thousands of people involved in the breeding of standardbred horses and the harness racing industry; and
Whereas, the standardbred horse breeding and racing industry, exemplified by New Jersey’s thousands of acres of horse breeding farms, continues to be an important part of the state’s economy;
Now, therefore, I, Jon S. Corzine, Governor of the State of New Jersey, do hereby proclaim May 21, 2008 as World Cup Amateur Drivers Championship Day in New Jersey and congratulate the organizers for bringing this prestigious event to the Garden State. (SBOANJ)
