New names for NJ races

Effective this year, the $500,000 New Jersey Pacing Classic will be known as the Anthony Abbatiello New Jersey Pacing Classic, and the $200,000 Miss New Jersey Pace will be known as the Tom D'Altrui Miss New Jersey Pace. The renaming of New Jersey's two richest state-bred races (both to be raced this year on May 27 at the Meadowlands) was done by the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association.



Abbatiello, a member of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Racing Commission, was a founder of the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey, in 1961. He served as its president for nearly three decades, and served 14 years as a board member, until he retired last November.



D'Altrui served 33 years as a Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey Board member, 22 years of which he was vice president. He retired 16 months ago. He was also represented District 12 of the U. S. Trotting Association on its board of directors for 18 years, and was active for more than 30 years as a member and officer of Harness Horsemen International.
