Poppy Lustre N set a world-record 1:50 performance over a five-eighths mile track to make it two straight $27,500 Mares Open Pace wins at Dover Downs on Tuesday, while a second Chuck Crissman trainee, Ultimate Bet, won the $23,000 Mares Jr. Open on a card dominated by fast female pacers.
Tim Tetrick, the sport and track's leading driver in 2007, pulled Poppy Lustre N out of third to quickly take the lead and then said goodbye to a field reduced to five after Dance Hall and Badlands Iron Lady were scratched. The 6 year old by Direct Flight won the feature last week over a "sloppy" track and this time the first non-freezing weather was to her liking as Tetrick won his second race of the day.
Ron Pierce moved Shake Away up to challenge Poppy Lustre N on the backstretch but to no avail. Ross Wolfenden steamed Yada Yada Yada A out of fourth and had to go four wide in the lane to finish second. Riddlemethat and Corey Callahan was third. The win was the fourth of the new year for the winner along with two seconds and two thirds, banking $72,510 for owners Wayne Pryor Estate and Wendy Crissman of Camden, Del.
The 1:50 clocking erases the former track and world record set first by Bunny Lake, driven by John Campbell, in a Distaff Classic elimination in 2004 and equaled by the David Miller-driven Glowing Report, again in a Distaff Classic elim in November 2006.
Three Point Acres' Ultimate Bet carved out a 1:51.1 victory to win the $23,000 Mares Jr. Open with Tony Morgan at the controls. Dream-A-While circled the field from seventh at the three-quarters to within a half length of the winner with Art Stafford Jr. driving. All About Wining with Tetrick was third.
Morgan won for the third time on the card driving Maremma Hanover home in 1:53.4 for Neal Oksenberg, Ginger Tree and Blu Belle stables, in a $14,000 mares pace. Wicked Rhymes (Mike Cole) took the place spot in front of race favorite Galaxy Girl (Tetrick).
Amy Warrington's Isn't She Fancy made it two win in a row as Steve Warrington drove the Grinfromeartoear mare to victory in 1:53.1 in a $17,500 mares pace. Miss MacKintush (Eddie Davis Jr.) finished strongly for second. Camturo (Pierce) came through with a third.
Newman Racing Stable's Binions dropped down into the first of two $17,000 mares winners-over paces and scored an impressive 1:52.3 triumph with Jim Morand in the bike. Lady Best (Roger Plante) took second with Love And Lust N (Wolfenden) the third horse.
A 6-1 shot, Fritzie Bunnie, owned by Bill and Richard Fitts, gave Morgan his fifth win registering a 1:52.3 conquest in the other $17,000 mares division. Carousel Frame (Ben Stafford Jr.) overcame starting from post eight to finish second. Four Winds N (Pierce), the odds-on favorite, was locked in until the last turn and stormed up to finish third.
The New Zealand-import Hopefull N, now owned by Preston Walls, Chad Tate and Steve Daugherty, won his second straight start in the U.S. with Brandon Givens driving the Totally Ruthless mare to a 1:55.1 score in a $13,000 mares pace. Costly Legs (Tim Curtin), at 18-1, finished second. Cha Cha Ching (Pierce) was third.
Dennis Lane's Play For Real closed with a rush for Jack Parker Jr. to overtake Price Check (Tetrick) in deep stretch for a 1:54 score in an $11,500 mares pace. River Valley Belle (Plante) took show money.
Owner Nathan Sipple claimed Mapua Magic N last week and the 8-year-old daughter of Holmes Hanover immediately paid a winning dividend when Pierce steered a 1:52.4 triumph in a $20,000-$25,000 claiming handicap. It was her third win of the year along with two seconds in six races. Pacific Pleasure (Tetrick) was runner-up. Evere's Connection (Brad Hanners) finished third.
The $10,000 feature trot went to American Master with Plante driving for Horsemans Financial Agency. The Master Lavec gelding came on in deep stretch and victory was insured when second-finishing RT Phoebes Giant (Morgan) broke stride approaching the finish line in the 1:57.3 mile. Here's BoBo (Eddie Davis Jr.) was third. (Dover Downs)
