New Ont. positives emerge

Four trainers have been given fines and suspendioins by the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) for positive tests for the class 3 drug torsemide, a diuretic which has not yet been approved for use in Canada or the United States. The ORC recently announced it was in the process of investigating 20 positive tests for torsemide.

Joe Pereira was given the harshest penalty of a one-year suspension and $5,000 fine for a torsemide positive on his horse Astroflight at Flamboro Downs Jan. 31. According to a ruling posted online by the ORC, Pereira’s suspension is scheduled to run April 29, 2007, through April 28, 2008.

Also receiving torsemide positives were Roger Brown, who received a $5,000 fine and six-month suspension (March 16 through Sept. 11) for his horse Day Off at Kawartha Downs Jan. 30, Vernon Cochrane, a $1,500 fine and three-month suspension (March 16 through June 13) for his horse Path To Riches at Flamboro Downs Jan. 31, and Bradley Pittock, a $1,500 fine and three-month suspension (March 16 through June 13) for his horse Serena Seelster at Windsor Raceway Jan. 31.
