The Sacramento Harness Association (SHA) is turning over operation of harness racing at Cal Expo to the California State Fair Exposition effective March 1. The last SHA card will be held March 1, with Cal Expo's first card scheduled to be March 6.
Dick Feinberg, who has served as general manager for SHA, will not join the Cal Expo team.
"I'll stay for a month to make sure the transition is smoooth," said Feinberg, a veteran racing executive who worked in the same capacity at Pompano Park before taking the position with SHA.
SHA made the move to turn over operation of the harness meet at the state fairgrounds because it couldn't make the economics of the meet work. SHA was faced with paying Cal Expo $1.8 million annually in rent, plus utilities and other expenses.
Just last month SHA president Ralph Scurfield resigned and Ivan Axelrod was elected president. Axelrod also serves as chairman of the board of the US Trotting Association.
The California Horse Racing Board is expected to formally approve the switch in the operator of the harness meet at a Feb. 28 session.
