A new Thoroughbred racetrack in the metro-Detroit area took a big step closer to its scheduled opening in July after Michigan Racing Commissioner Christine White announced Wednesday she has awarded Post It Stables Inc. a license to operate a race meet. There has been no Thoroughbred racing in southeast Michigan since November 1998 when Ladbroke DRC closed its doors, leaving metro Detroit with only harness racing at Hazel Park and Northville Downs.
"I am very pleased to announce that Thoroughbred racing will continue here in Michigan," said Commissioner White in a press release regarding the track that will be located in Romulus, near Metropolitan Airport. "Our office has worked with Post It Stables Inc to make this happen."
After Ladbroke DRC closed it doors, Thoroughbred racing took place at Great Lake Downs, which was the former Muskegon Harness Race Course. However, when owner Magna Entertainment closed that track last fall it left the Wolverine State without any site for full-time Thoroughbred racing.
