New track mark in London

She needed the entire track and a photo to do it, but Vegas Girl now lays claim to the Western Fair Raceway track record for pacing mares, winning Monday’s $13,300(C) Mares Open in 1:55.

The 5-year-old Keystone Raider mare trained by Kevin McMaster for Mom and The Kids Stable of Scarborough, ON, used post one to her best advantage with Brad Forward in the bike.

Though she went wire to wire, Vegas Girl was forced to race head-to-head with Serenity Seelster (Mike Saftic) for the final half. At one point on the final turn Serenity Seelster got past by almost half a length. In the stretch Youthful Seelster (Ross Battin) wheeled three wide out of the pocket to confront the lead pair. In the closing strides Vegas Girl battled back for a slim nose win over Serenity Seelster.

The winning time of 1:55 was the fastest by an older mare in more than 45 years of history at the London oval and it was one tick better than the 1:55.1 track standard in the category set just last year by Lavish Jen. It was the fifth time a track record was tied or broken since the current meet began last October 14.
