New track superintendent at Hoosier Park

January 30, 2009 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Robert “RJ” Moore has been named track superintendent at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino. Moore has been a member of the track maintenance crew for the past nine years. He will oversee day to day operations during both the Standardbred racing season as well as the Thoroughbred racing meet. Moore replaces Gary Wolff, who resigned his position last fall to return to New Jersey and become track super at the Meadowlands.

A native of Madison County, Moore has been around Standardbred racing all of his life. He had several relatives that participated in the sport in the central Indiana area while growing up. After graduating from Alexandria High School, Moore went into the logging business and later worked for Gastex near Dallas, Texas, a propane tank service.

“After returning from Texas, I decided to look for employment closer to home,” said Moore. “Since I had heavy equipment experience, I inquired about a job at Hoosier Park. I’ve been fortunate to have worked under two track superintendents, John Betts and Gary Wolff.”

Moore’s main responsibility during live racing will be to maintain a safe racing surface, which includes conditioning, watering, and grading the track. Moore will also oversee the transition of the surface from the Standardbred meet to the Thoroughbred meet.

“Hoosier Park is fortunate to have such a qualified candidate on its team,” said Jeff Smith, general manager of racing. “With RJ’s experience and knowledge of our racing surface, I am confident that Hoosier Park will continue to offer the best racing surface for our horsemen and equine athletes.”

Moore and his crew of eight will be ready for racing when the 16th season of Standardbred racing gets underway Tuesday, March 24. The 80-day meet will offer racing five days a week through Saturday, July 11 with a Tuesday through Saturday schedule. A new twilight post time schedule will be offered beginning at 4:45 p.m. each day with the exception of Saturday when live racing begins at 12:45 p.m. The 2009 Thoroughbred meet will begin Thursday, July 29.
