Tioga Downs’ five-eighths mile track has had a facelift in recent weeks. The old surface was scraped off and a limestone-based material was used to rebuild the overall surface and to re-bank the turns. Then, after the track closed on Wednesday, track superintendent Bob Ashelman started laying down the new racing surface.
The horsemen of Tioga left on Wednesday with a tannish-brown track and were greeted Thursday morning to a totally different looking grayish-black track. The material is a mix of what is used at Tioga’s sister track, Vernon Downs, and what is used at the Meadowlands.
“This material will be easier on the horses. They’ll be able to grab the track a lot better,” said Bob Ashelman, track superintendent.
Tioga’s opening day is Friday, May 11, with a 6:50 pm post time. The first condition sheet of the new meet has been posted on the website ( www.tiogadowns.com). Tioga will also be holding a special night-time qualifier on Monday, May 7, to test out the cameras and lights and make sure everything is in working order. Entries for Monday’s qualifiers are due by Saturday, May 5 at 10 am. The direct line to the race office is (607) 699-7688. (Tioga Downs press release)
