Two new winners emerged in Saturday night's second leg of the Glorys Comet Trotting Series for older trotters at Woodbine Racetrack, meaning there will be no series sweep of this year's event.
In the first $50,000(C) division, San Pail made a snap move to the front in the second quarter for driver Randy Waples and then was never seriously threatened en route to a 1:54.3 victory. Scorpion Move, who was a round-one winner, followed all the way in the pocket to finish second with Mystical Ryan landing the show spot. It was the first win in two tries this season for San Pail who is co-owned by trainer Rodney Hughes along with Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, Ont. The lion's share of the purse boosted his earnings to more than $350,000. Armbro Chronicle made his first appearance in the series in the second split and promptly scored a gate-to-wire victory for regular driver Mike Saftic in the identical time of 1:54.3. Please Poppy shook loose late to pick up the place spot with Define The World rounding out the top three. It was the 29th career win for Armbro Chronicle who is co-owned by conditioner Kent Baker along with Cal Patterson, Wayne Smith and Randy Fielder, all of Ontario. The 7-year-old gelding, who is an O'Brien Award finalist as Canada's top older trotter, went over $980,000 lifetime with the win. The $86,000 (est.) final of The Glorys Comet Series will go postward next Saturday night at Woodbine. (WEG)
