Last year Giacometti was a force to be reckoned with on the New York Sire Stakes circuit and after his eye-opening 1:56.3 victory in his first seasonal start at Monticello Raceway on Tuesday, where the altered son of Bettor’s Delight cruised to a nine-length triumph, it again appears he’ll be a force again this season. True, his competition at the Mighty M in the non-winners of seven races lifetime class that afternoon wasn’t against stellar competition, but the way the colt handled the field is perhaps a vision of things to come again this year for the Ed Hart-trained youngster. Billy “Zeke” Parker Jr. was at the controls and he took Giacometti off the gate at the start and settled down in fifth position and remained there until the field headed toward the half-mile marker. When Parker moved the colt out to challenge he was six lengths behind the pacesetter and all Zeke at that point did was take a deep seat and a good hold and Giacometti did the rest. At the three-quarters, Giacometti had two lengths on the field and when Parker gave the colt his head, Giacometti scooted away to an oh-so-easy nine-length triumph over Winsmith Kirby, driven by Greg Merton.
“Eddie (Hart) qualified him (Giacometti) a couple of times at Pocono (Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs) and he had him in top form here today,” Parker said of Giacometti's seasonal debut. "He won real easy. I was even taking him back down the stretch and he still finished in :56 and a piece (1:56.3). Eddie says he’s bigger this year and I can tell you that the colt’s got some pace in him.”
Giacometti began his career at The Mighty M last year and posted two of his five seasonal triumphs here. He was impressive enough to earn 2-year old Pacer of the Year honors from the local scribes. In all, last season Giacometti had five wins, two seconds and one third in nine starts and earned his owner, John Fielding of Sent off as the probative favorite Tuesday at the Mighty M, Giacometti paid a paltry $3.10 for win.
