The Hoosier Park stewards declared the fifth race Wednesday night "no contest" after an accident in the first turn took out nearly the entire field, with only Monroe'sflyingjet, driven by Neil Coleman, the only horse to complete the circuit, crossing the wire in 1:58.2 in the $4,500 contest.
Mister America, trained and driven by Brooke Nickells, fell while racing second behind Monroe’sflying Jet, collecting the rest of the 10-horse field. According to Hoosier Park publicity director Tammy Knox, all involved escaped serious injury.
“He just made a break as I was moving him over, tripped and fell. I think his feet got crossed and he just got himself all tripped up,” said Nickells Thursday morning. “I have seven stitches on the top of my left ear. A couple of bikes got torn up and some of the other drivers have some bumps and bruises.”
Nickells said she is taking a few days off from driving and training in order to keep a helmet off the injured ear. Her father, Bruce, will assist with the training duties while her boyfriend, fellow horseman Joe Essig Jr., will more than likely drive pacing mare Me And My Baby in Friday night’s $23,000 filly and mare invitational.
Incidentally, Essig sustained a cracked rib and injured hip in Wednesday night’s fourth race when his mount, Ms Antsy Pants, fell shortly after finishing a narrow second to favorite Jealous Heart.
“She jumped a pylon and just went down,” she said of Essig’s incident. Despite a tough night of racing, Nickells maintained a good sense of humor when contacted Thursday morning. When discussing the two spills she added: “That’s the kind of daily double you don’t want.”
