In a hugely significant art development for harness racing and art collectors, and a giant boost for Harness Track's of America's (HTA) College Scholarship Fund, the upcoming October 4 HTA art auction at the Tattersalls Sales Pavilion in Lexington, Ky., has had nine original paintings and drawings by George Ford Morris consigned to the sale.
The paintings are from the estate of Sandra Van Buren, wife of former harness racing executive Bill Van Buren, and are likely to represent the largest single sales consignment in the 31 yeasr of the HTA Scholarship Art Auction. George Ford Morris works are highly sought by collectors, and a collection of this magnitude almost never appears on the market.
The collection, including seven exquisite oil paintings, are of celebrated harness horses of the past. The oils include Messenger, his sire Mambrino, Electioneer, Axtell, Greyhound, Dan Patch, and Blackhawk and Lady Suffolk, and a superb charcoal of Justin Morgan.
With the regular 40-page printed catalogue of the auction already in distribution, a special full color supplement featuring the works is being prepared. (HTA)
