New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine has formally proposed that the state's Department of Agriculture be eliminated, along with the state departments of personnel and commerce, a move which he says will cut 3,000 jobs from the payroll. However, even if the Department of Agriculture is eliminated, it will not affect the New Jersey Sire Stakes, which will be likely then fall under another government agency.
New Jersey is presently carrying $32 billion in debt, which prompted the governor to remark as follows in his address to a joint meeting of the legislature: "New Jersey has a government its people cannot afford."
