Reports are swirling around New Jersey that Governor Jon Corzine plans to announce the elimination of the Department of Agriculture and State Board of Agriculture when he gives his annual Budget Message on Tuesday, but because the New Jersey Sire Stakes is a legislated program, the Sire Stakes are not in jeopardy.
A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture told harnessracing.com, "The Sire Stakes is a legislated program that's not going away. We may have a different address, but the races and program are not in jeopardy."
Last Thursday the New Jersey Farm Bureau president alerted members of Gov. Corzine's plan to eliminate the Department of Agriculture as a cost-cutting move, and urged members to contact their legislators to keep the department open.
