A pair of daughters of Western Ideal won opening round divisions of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 3-year-old pacing fillies on Friday night at the Meadowlands. Lightning D Dube won the $35,400 first division, the first race, while Current Hanover prevailed in the $36,000 second division, carded as the sixth race.

Lightning D Dube, driven by his namesake, Daniel Dube, scored a head victory over Artcotic (by Artiscape) in 1:52.1 with another three lengths back to Southwind Rio (Artsplace) in third.
Owned by Glenn K. Berger’s Lightning Stable of Millstone, N.J., Lightning D Dube was unraced at two and making only her second career start. The $22,000 yearling purchase, trained by Anthony Mannino, has now banked $19,050.

Longshot Current Hanover drew off to a 2 3/4-length victory over 8-5 Platinum Hanover (Western Ideal) in 1:52.3. Calgary Hanover (Western Ideal), the 2006 Breeders Crown winner, rallied up the pylons for third, 3 1/2 lengths back.

Driven by George Brennan and trained by Richard “Nifty” Norman , Current Hanover was making her 2007 debut. Racing in the name of David McDuffee of Nashua, N.H. and Irving Liverman of Hampstead , Quebec , Current Hanover was a $75,000 yearling purchase. She has career earnings of $171,668 with four wins, one second and one third from 11 starts.

New Jersey Sire Stakes action for 3-year-old pacing fillies continues with two more preliminary legs on June 8 and June 15, leading to a $175,000 final on June 22, all at the Meadowlands.  (NJSS)
