NJSS at Meadowlands

New Jersey Sire Stakes action at the Meadowlands Wednesday night featured two close finishes and one open-lengths score. Simple Task and Passionate Glide eked out victories in 1:55.2 and 1:54.4, respectively, for Brittany Farms while Queen Serene jogged home first in 1:55.1.

In the first $25,500 division, Simple Task was carried three-wide at one point in the mile, but cleared to the lead at about the half and then dug in to hold off rallies by Emantee and Wherley. A neck separated all three fillies at the wire.

Simple Task is now undefeated in three starts this season. She was bred by Jorgen Jahre and is owned by Brittany Farms. Jimmy Takter trains the sister to Hambletonian Oaks champion Silver Springs, and was also in the sulky Wednesday night. The Yankee Glide-sired filly was unraced as a 2 year old.

Takter turns over the lines to Ron Pierce for Passionate Glide, another Yankee Glide filly bred and owned by Brittany Farms. Pierce raced the last year’s Breeder’s Crown champion off the pace, yet with her strong closing kick in the stretch drive, she wore down Klipspringer, who took control of the race before the half. Passionate Glide prevailed by a head over the 32-1 longshot Klipspringer, who won five of 11 starts last season and had finished third in two previous NJSS events.

Queen Serene, a filly by Dream Vacation, won her second race in three starts this season. Once again, a stretch rally got the job done as the filly swept home with no urging from trainer-driver Trond Smedshammer. Timo Yli Panula owns the winner.
