Lady Mattgalane rallied after a second-over trip behind Arts A Flutter and edged that rival by a neck to win the $175,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes final for 3-year-old pacing fillies in 1:51 Friday night at the Meadowlands.
Lady Mattgalane, a filly by Artiscape, went off at odds of 9-1 while Arts A Flutter, also by Artiscape, was the betting favorite. Arts A Flutter got away fourth as Phyleon and Southwind Rio exchanged the lead during the first half of the race. Going to the half John Campbell pulled Arts A Flutter and Brian Sears followed with Lady Mattgalane.
"We were very fortunate when the draw came out to be lined up right next to Arts A Flutter," said Sears, "and then the trip worked out perfectly for us."
Greg Peck trains Lady Mattgalane for owners Perretti Racing Stable LLC and Clay and Scott Horner. Anthony Perretti revealed in a post-race interview that the parties became partners after discovering they had both been bidding on Lady Mattgalane at the New Jersey Classic Yearling Sale.
"We were bidding against each other, and we thought she'd go for $25,000 and she went for $50,000," he added.
