NJ track leasing suspended

In a statement issued Monday, incoming New Jersey Gov. Richard Codey said plans to lease the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park racetracks to private interests have been suspended indefinitely.



"As governor of New Jersey, I want to review what steps are appropriate to ensure the health and prosperity of both the horse racing and casino industries in New Jersey, including whether the leasing of the tracks is in our best interests."



Codey will take office Nov. 16, replacing Gov. James McGreevey, who is resigning. In the statement Codey expressed concern for job security for track employees if the facilities are under private control, and he also added that he was unsure of the state surrending control of the tracks with the possibility of the addition of slot machines within the next few years.
