What was at first billed as a "novelty" non-whipping race Saturday at Indiana Downs will now be contested with drivers carrying whips but with the stipulation they be tucked and used only if the situation dictates. The race is the seventh on the 13-race card, an $8,000 event with a full field of 10 horses.
Indiana Downs' presiding judge Tim Schmitz said that out of concerns for safety, the conditions were changed so that drivers will be able to carry whips. He noted that if a horse breaks, drivers may have trouble moving out of the way without the use of a whip. “They will not be able to use the whips to advance their position,” Schmitz stated.
