No budget, no racing?

Despite a budget showdown between New Jersey Gov. John Corzine and the state legislature that theoretically could close the racetracks, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority is planning for racing this weekend at the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park.

If there is no state budget passed, state offices—including the New Jersey Racing Commission and the Casino Control Commission—could be shut down. That would force the doors to be closed at not only the state’s racetracks, but also the Atlantic City casinos on a busy holiday weekend.

Chris McErlean, vice president and general manager at the Meadowlands, told harnessracing.com he had spoken to the New Jersey Racing Commission. “The possibility exists (for a shut down), but we are going forward with plans for racing. Informally, we have been told we should be able to race,” said McErlean. “We’ll stay in contact with the racing commission to monitor the situation.”
