No foul play at Pompano

The investigation into an abnormal pari-mutuel payout in a race on July 5 at Pompano Park has been released by track management showing that no foul play took place.

The 10th race on July 10 saw Rip Rock And Roll (#6), at odds of 3.90 to 1, lead from start to finish and paid $9.80 to win for a $2 wager. Winchendon Walt (#5), at odds of 130.30 to 1, followed in second place and paid $54.20 to place. The resulting 6-5 exacta payoff, which normally would have paid anywhere from $250 to $500 for a $2 wager, returned only $25.80.

Pompano Park management, immediately following the race, contacted both the Florida Department of Pari-Mutuel Wagering (FDPMW) and Standardbred Investigative Services (SIS), a division of Harness Tracks of America, Inc., and asked them to assist with the investigation.

Both organizations worked together with Pompano Park management on the investigation and came away with the following review:

It was determined that the race itself was conducted properly and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Pompano Park, the FDPMW and the United States Trotting Association and that all mutuel wagers made on the race and the payoffs for the race were properly conducted and calculated.

It was determined that due to a very small exacta wagering pool on the race that a few bettors played the winning exacta combination resulted in the low payout. Two different off-track sites had $20 or larger wagers made directly on the winning combination and one site had a $100 exacta box wagered on the winning combination. (Pompano)
