One prominent name missing among the entries for the upcoming $1 million Meadowlands Pace is two-time New Jersey Sire Stakes champion Dial Or Nodial, who suffered a bruised right hind foot while finishing fifth in the $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup June 27 at Mohawk. Trainer Jim Campbell told harnessracing.com that the sophomore gelding was not entered because he is still recovering, with no set timetable for his return to the races.
“He’s improving a lot, but he’s got a ways to go,” said Campbell Wednesday afternoon. “There’s nothing that’s shown up that’s definite. He’s not on a schedule right now; we’re just playing it day by day.” After an eight-win freshman season and $414,124 in earnings last year, the Arlene and Jules Siegel-owned Dial Or Nodial came into 2009 as one of the highly-regarded sophomore prospects. The son of Western Ideal had three wins, a second and a third in his first five starts this year, including a career-best 1:50.1 victory in the $200,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes final and a triumphant trip in his North America Cup elimination.
Dial Or Nodial was then sent off the following week as the third choice in the betting in the $1.5 million NA Cup final, but had to settle for fifth after enduring a tough first-over journey for driver Brian Sears. Campbell said Dial Or Nodial was favoring his leg in the Mohawk paddock afterward, so he sent the pacer to the University of Guelph. X-rays done then and subsequent tests did not reveal any specific injury, according to the trainer.
