Despite a pair of gutsy wins in his last two starts, New Jersey Classic winner BG’s Folly will not be supplemented to the $1 million Meadowlands Pace. With eliminations looming on Saturday, July 10, trainer George Berkner and the pacer’s connections, which include his wife Ginny, have decided not to reach for the $100,000 supplemental fee. Berkner said that BGs Folly, whose last win was a three-quarter length 1:50.3 victory at the Meadowlands in the Jersey Cup on July 3, is doing just fine without racing in the Pace and that he doesn’t regret not making the colt eligible all along.
“After watching them since the 1970s, I knowknow what it takes to go in there,” said Berkner. “I just don’t believe that you should take a $21,000 yearling that’s had just two starts at two and who is a growthy colt who starts to get sore and you turn him out – now what are you supposed to do fire away like there’s no end of it? How much can you stake them to?” BG’s Folly has earned $341,205 for Berkner and company, and as might be expected there have been offers to buy the colt, but the trainer is not seriously entertaining them at this time. “I’ve had offers,” he acknowledged. “But right now my wife is getting more fun out of this than anything else. She loves this horse; she loves the excitement of racing him. He’s like our reason to take all these little trips to Pocono and other tracks. It keeps us enjoying the business.” With no horse of his own to root for in the Pace, Berkner still knows who he’d like to see win. “My sentimental favorite is We Will See, (who was second by three parts of a length to Sportswriter in the North America Cup). He’s right across the aisle from my colt and (trainer) Sam De Pinto, who helps me in the barn, has done such a great job with all of the horses.
