Rainbow Blue easily won her qualifier Thursday morning at Dover Downs, her first racetrack appearance as defending Horse of the Year. The 4-year-old mare was clocked in 1:57.1 as she drew clear of the competition to win by open lengths.

Trainer and co-owner George Teague Jr. admitted to The Horseman shortly after the race that he was a bit concerned about Rainbow Blue leaving from the outside post eight. Driven by Jim Morand, Blue was parked through fractions of :28.3 and :58.1, finally taking the lead past the half. From there she paced to a 1:28.1 three-quarters clocking and came home in :29 to win in 1:57.1.

"She never really grabbed the racetrack until past the half, "said Teague by cell phone from the barbership while waiting to get a haircut. "She'll go back in next Thursday (March 24) in a qualifier at Dover Downs. I'm not going to let her show much speed until the third qualifier (at the Meadowlands on April 1)."

When asked what Morand said afterward, Teague commented with a slight chuckle: "He said 'She was good,' to put it lightly."
