Norman Barron, 74, the former chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission, died Saturday June 5.
Mr. Barron served on the Ohio State Racing Commission for more than 20 years. In 1983, he was appointed to the Ohio State Racing Commission and never missed a meeting. For six of those years, he served as the chairman of the Commission. He also attended races at all of the tracks in Ohio for many years.
He was also a member of the board of directors and a past chairman of the Association of Racing Commissioners International. He previously received the prestigious Joan Pew Award, recognizing him as the most outstanding horse racing regulator of the year.
Mr. Barron graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1960. While in law school, he served as a member of the law review and garnered several other academic distinctions. After graduation, he spent two years on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Law. He returned to Cincinnati in 1962 and practiced law there ever since. He served as the managing partner of Barron Peck Bennie & Schlemmer for more than 25 years.
During his 50 years of practice, Mr. Barron developed expertise in a number of areas including real estate, probate and administrative law. He also served as the general counsel for the Greater Cincinnati Automobile Dealer’s Association for over 35 years and became widely respected as one of the leading attorneys in representing the interests of automobile dealers.
Mr. Barron is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Esther, Michael (Carrie) and Hal (Carol); siblings, Lois (Barry) Lefton and Bernie (Ilze); and grandchildren, Joshua, Nathan, Jacob and Sammy.
