Northfield hosts Scarlet and Gray Stakes, Ohio Sires Stakes

Veteran Ohio-bred mares contested $44,000 Scarlet and Gray Stakes on the pace and trot and the trot yielded a mild surprise as Brett Miller and B V's Sister ($6.40) edged That Fly'n Angel in 1:57.4. B V's Sister sat the pocket behind Whotookwhat throughout and used the inside passing lane to get the win. B V's Sister, by Big Victor, is trained by Virgil Morgan, Jr., for the Barnett ZImmerman, Llc of Deerfield, Illinois, The win pushed her career earnings just shy of $250,000. Favored Winnie The Who missed the ticket as Whotookwhat held for show money.

The Mare Pace went to Ryan Stahl and Osborne's Gypsy ($4.80) in a tight photo with Don't Blame Her. Stahl committed to the front with the daughter of Myopia's Mop and survived a parked-out 27.2 opening panel to post a 1:54.3 win, her 18th in 29 career starts. With earnings just short of $300,000 the Eric Hamlet-trainee is owned by Northfield Wall-of-Famer Jerry Osborne.

The $46,000 Horse Trot saw Rich Paltani and Gates Mills Stables' Master's Light, the longest shot ont he board at 14-1 repel the first-over bid of 1-9, three time defending champ and world champion Dunkster to win in 1:58. Trainer Mark Deaton called on Ryan Stahl to drive and after a fast 27.2 opening panel, he was able to get a breather to the half in :58 and that was the difference. "Dunkster has made all that money for a reason," said Stahl, " and he just kept coming. But the wire got there just in time. This Sands Hot finished third.

After eliminations last week, eight finalists contested a $36,000 championship in the Scarlet and Gray Horse Pace. 6-5 KF St Patrick and Aaron Merriman exploded going to three-quarters opening up a large margin on the field around the turn and stopping the timer in 1:51.3, the 2nd fastest local mile of the year. Trainer Mike Medors shares ownership of the winner with Henry Kauffman of New Baltimore, Ohio. The win was his 24th in 48 career starts and the 50% career winner has now banked $347,874. War Boots flew in the stretch for place money, while longshot Laughing Is An Art finished third.

Ohio Sires Stakes highlight undercard
There was no wagering available but the three $20,0000 freshman colt Ohio Sires Stakes on Staurday's Scarlet and Gray card at Northfield did yield a Dailey Double as driver-trainer Jim Dailey scored in the second split with Paul Thiesing and Kimberly Dailey's B Contemporary ($18.40) and came right back to win with big favorite Deep Chip ($3.20) in the 3rd. B Contemproary used the passing lane to go by favored leader Master's Cook, scoring in 2:01.4 to post a new lifetime best. Tipster was third in that heat. B Contemporary, a son of Pegasus Spur from the  Overcomer mare B Over Soon,  picked up his 2nd staright win to push his career earnings nearl $30,000. Deep Chip has now banked  $47,550 while winning 4 of 5. My Mom's Career finihsed 2nd in his career debut, while show money went ot fast-charging Mom's Looker. Deep Chip is owned by Kathy Ratcliff and Larry Zosel. Deep Chip was sired by Chip Chip Hooray and is from the Supergill Mare  Ceremonial.

The opening split went to James Shipley's Sun Of A Victory ($5.00) who led at every call as he reduced his lifetime best by four seconds to 1:59. Standing 8th in the points coming in, the son of Victory Sam-Well Connected scored easily over Nordic Victory and Master In Charge. Doug Rine conditions the winner and called on Russ Swartz to drive.

There were also two $24,300 freshman colt pacing events and the first was won by Brett Miller and Somethingsgotagive ($9.00), who collared pacesetter Standupnkissme opn the wire to post a 1:54.1 divisional track record. Uncle Josh was third. Miller drove the Jim Arledge, Jr.-trainee, a son of Yankee Cruiser from the Stand Forever mare Cheery, for owner Laura Baker, and although he had not been driving the gelding regularly, he actually helped break the three-time winner.

The second freshman Sires Pace went to J Cruise ($3.30), in line to Kyle Ater.  A son of Yankee Cruiser from the good mare Tm's-future-woman, he avoided the breaking Lola's Cruiser int he first turn and pulled th pocket at three-quarters to post a 1:56.3 win. Dan Ater trains the winner, who has a 6-4-1-1, $44,220 summary, for the partenrship of Booher, Fawcett, Crownover and SHoot The Moon Stables. Whole Lot of Fun was seond and Osborne's Yankee, a half-brother to Scarlet and Gray champ Osborne's Gypsy, finished third. (Northfield)
