Just days after Cleveland news media broadcast shocking reports of starving and neglected horses in nearby Brimfield Township, in Portage County, Northfield Park horsemen and management responded with monetary aid and needed supplies. A spontaneous effort, led by Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association representative Amy Hollar, yielded 500 pounds of specialized grain feed, as well as blankets and hoods which the Portage County Animal Protective League requested. “We discussed it in the paddock Saturday, right after hearing about it,” Hollar explained. “I spoke with our horsemen and we decided to take the money from our emergency fund to purchase the specific items the APL requested. They have requested that we deliver the material next week, as they have limited storage area and have some grain on hand.” Track management contributed a check to help cover emergency veterinary work on the horses in distress. Northfield Park is also a financial supporter of New Vocations, which specializes in retraining retired pacers and trotters as pleasure horses. Northfield chief operating officer Tom Aldrich said, “I have seen this spirit of generosity many times from our horsemen’s community at Northfield Park. At the core of this business is a respect and love for these animals.”
