Northfield Park ready to add keno, other tracks likely to follow

Keno will be introduced in the state of Ohio early next month and Northfield Park chief operating officer Tom Aldrich confirmed to harnessracing.com Tuesday afternoon that the Cleveland track will be installing three terminals to sell the tickets when the game launches Monday, Aug. 4. A winner will be announced every four minutes, and the track will have the numbers shown on an in-house TV channel.

"We were supportive of this when we heard the state was moving in this direction," said Aldrich.

Northfield Park recently opened a sports bar and lounge on the first floor of its grandstand, which was attractive to lottery officials, according to Aldrich. The track has been selling lottery tickets for what Aldrich said was "forever," and in fact a couple of years ago sold one of two winning tickets that shared a $20 million jackpot to a group of racetrack employees.

"We've had visits by their top officials and this is a good location," said Aldrich of the Ohio Lottery Commission. "We've always been no worse than third--and sometimes first--as far as ticket sales for the lottery.

"We don't believe this is a cure-all, but it's a positive step and we're grateful the state is moving in the right direction."
