Northville back in action

March 02, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Northville Downs was back in action Tuesday night and it was a 3-year-old trotting filly named Virginia In Action that won the first race contested over the half-miler since Feb. 5. The Michigan track had been shut down for live racing since due to an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) and the entire barn area was also quarantined.

Despite heavy snow the day before that prompted the cancellation of qualifiers earlier Tuesday, the track was listed as "good" when the nighttime program began, with the stewards marking it four seconds off. Virginia In Action may have won for driver Larry Stalbaum, but she needed only 2:10.3 to do so in the $4,000 conditioned event. The daughter of Keystone Nordic had a bit of an advantage over her rivals as she last raced Feb. 19 at Windsor Raceway, the lone horse in the field to have stepped onto a racetrack since Feb. 5.

King Cab won the second race of the night, but the 4-year-old gelded pacer also didn't motor around the four turns like a taxi. With Vince Copeland driving, King Cab was clocked in 2:08.1. It was his first pari-mutuel start since Dec. 12 and off a Jan. 25 qualifier.

The night's speed badge went to Pacific Titan, who won in 2:01.1 in a $4,500 conditioned pace. Mike Wolfe drove the 6-year-old Camluck gelding for trainer John Kina and owner TC Stables. Pacific Titan was coming off a second-place finish in a Feb. 20 race at Windsor Raceway.
