Northville cancels races

Northville Downs canceled its Tuesday night racing program as well as morning qualifiers as a result of a 2-year-old colt, who was brought to the Michigan track about 10 days ago, showed signs of equine herpes. Although the young horse had an elevated temperature and nasal discharge, reports on Tuesday said that the temperature had gone down.



The horse in question, which would be the fourth to be afflicted with the virus in recent weeks, is stabled in a barn which is located directly above the paddock at Northville Downs. He has been tested for the virus but a delay in finding the test results until Wednesday led to the cancellation of the nighttime program.



"We won't have the test results back in time to let the horsemen know whether it is positive or negative," Michigan deputy racing commissioner Jim Bowes told The Horseman Tuesday afternoon. "We are going to err on the side of caution and not bring those horsemen to the racetrack until we know the results."
