The popularity of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) program was never more apparent as this week, when a total of 58 two-year-old trotting males were entered in the first NYSS leg of the season, and 38 two-year-old trotting fillies lined up behind the starting gate at Buffalo Raceway.

Those numbers required seven divisions for colts, with purses in the $34,000 range, and five divisions for fillies, which competed for $26,942 or $27,442.

There were flashes of talent, such as the 2:00.4 win by the Credit Winner colt Neal, who used a three-wide move to stalk the leader, but at the other extreme, a charted line for one filly who was beaten 97 ¼ lengths, trotting her own mile in 2:23.3.

In the siring department, Credit Winner was well represented with 25 starters in the freshman events, and his offspring took home five wins to lead all sires. Conway Hall and Cash Hall also had good showings with three Conway Hall fillies winning, while Cash Hall had one colt winner.

New York-sired 2-year-old pacing colts are set to compete at Buffalo Raceway on Saturday.

Seven divisions, that is right seven, will be going for a total of over $120,000 in purse money. Of the 51 colts and gelding entered, 16 are by Art Major, 11 by Artiscape, 11 by  Bettor's Delight, and 6 by American Ideal. These are the first crop of American Ideal to begin their racing careers.

Trainer Ray Schnittker, who was on fire Wednesday, winning four of five stakes, will look to continue his winning ways with his three entries, including Mat's Delight in the first division, race two. Also entered in the second race are Bombay Away for Rochester native Sam Caruso, and Upfrontscott Brown, who won last week at Goshen.

In race 3, Up The Credit, who was purchased last fall at Lexington for $72,000, was installed as the morning line favorite.

The third division maybe the most even. George Teague's Keystone Edge will start from the second position. Thomas J will start from the four hole for owner Ken Jacobs and trainer Linda Toscano. Buffalo Raceway's top driver Jack Flanigen will guide Denver Dolly trained by George Ducharme, while Jim Morrill will be in the bike behind Rainbow Power for trainer Paul Reid.

Gunpowder, another entry from the Schnittker Stable, headlines the sixth race that has eight colts who were purchased for a combined $227,000 last fall. Major Way, one of trainer Linda Toscano's five entries, drew the rail. Brian Cross will be in the sulky of South Coast, who posted a 1:56.2 mile at Vernon Downs. Regular Buffalo driver Ray Fisher will be aboard Yacht King for trainer Mickey Preston.

Bettor's Delight colts fill the fifth division as five of the seven were sired by the stallion standing at Blue Chip Farms. Reflection Of Blue, Bettors Glass, Townslight Hanover, Gamblers Island and Roadside Delight will try to make it an all Bettor's Delight trifecta.

Another of George Teague's seven entries, Remus Blue Chip, leads the 10th race. Canadian invaders Artist Supplies and Salesman Joe will be some difficult competition along with Test Of Will, trained by Joe Spadaro with Brian Cross in the bike. (harnessracing.com & Buffalo Raceway)
