On Tuesday afternoon Monticello Raceway will host the seventh leg of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) for freshman pacing fillies which will carry a total purse in excess of $150,000. And as the events continue deeper into the season the amount of starters falls off as only those who believe they have a good chance of getting a good check enter.
Many of the entrants will be looking to add to their seasonal point totals with hopes of earning a berth in the $175,000 final which will be raced in the early fall.
That being said, three $50,293 divisions will go to post Tuesday as races four, six and eight on the 14-race card.
Centralia Hanover, a daughter of Art Major owned by Rick Phillips and the W Springtime Racing Stable, has been dominant is all her NYSS splits. She had four consecutive triumphs before going to Canada where she finished finish fifth in the Eternal Camnation.
The Mark Harder pupil has thus far bankrolled $64,114 and owns a 1:55.4 record taken at Vernon Downs on Aug. 12. Jimmy Morrill Jr. will be in the sulky when Centralia Hanover leaves from post seven in the second division, race six on the program.
At this time Centralia Hanover, with 150 points, is second on the leaderboard and almost assured of a position in the rich finale.
In race eight, the final $50,293 division, Kenny Jacobs and Linwood Higgins’ Silk Purse will be the betting favorite on the strength of two wins two seconds and one third in six seasonal outings. But most impressive is the Bettor’s Delight filly’s 1:56.3 victory over the double-oval at Buffalo Raceway on July 24.
Jason Bartlett will handle the driving chores for trainer Linda Toscano when Silk Purse leaves from the three hole.
Silk Purse, with 133 points is currently in fifth position on the list of eligibles to the series final.
But arguably the most competitive leg will be the first division with the likes of Hayworth Blue Chip, Bettor B Lucky, Brownsville Bomber and Double Major locking horns.
Hayworth Blue Chip currently has 70 points; Bettor B Lucky just 25 while Brownsville Bomber chimes in with 32, but all have serious credentials.
However Kenny Jacobs’ Double Major, with 124 points, is currently sixth in points and will carry the favorites roll into her division when Bartlett teams her from the four hole for trainer Linda Toscano. (Monticello)
